About this role

Role Overview

Provide senior mechanical engineering subject-matter expertise to help train and evaluate AI systems so they can solve, explain, and reason about complex mechanical engineering problems. You will review AI-generated technical answers, solve advanced engineering questions, and document clear feedback that improves model performance across design, analysis, and R&D scenarios. This is a remote, contractor engagement focused on advancing AI capabilities in mechanical engineering.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and solve advanced mechanical engineering problems across design, structural and thermal analysis, and research and development.
  • Review AI-produced technical responses for technical correctness, engineering quality, and accuracy.
  • Apply practical engineering judgment to real-world design, analysis, and theoretical questions.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot mechanical systems using finite element analysis, statics and dynamics, thermodynamics, and vibration analysis.
  • Contribute domain knowledge to guide model improvements and refine AI reasoning in mechanical engineering contexts.
  • Document feedback with clear written and verbal explanations to enhance AI learning and performance.
  • Collaborate remotely with a distributed team of experts and project participants.
Qualifications
  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, or BS in Mechanical Engineering with 8 or more years of relevant industry experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in mechanical design, analysis, or R&D.
  • Expert knowledge in statics and dynamics, thermodynamics, finite element analysis, and vibration or structural analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex mechanical systems using finite element methods, hand calculations, and experimental validation.
  • Familiarity with standards and codes such as ASME BPVC and design-for-reliability practices.
  • Professional English proficiency with exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with FEA and simulation software such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or Nastran, and with CAD platforms or product R&D in a manufacturing environment is a plus.
Strongly Preferred Evidence of Problem-Authoring Rigor

Applicants who can demonstrate rigorous problem-authoring or technical evaluation experience are strongly preferred. Examples include:

  • Service on an olympiad problem committee or item-writer roles for exams such as NCEES or academic qualifying exams.
  • Author credits for textbook problem sets or solutions manuals.
  • Service on ASME BPVC or related codes and standards committees.
  • Top placements or leadership roles in competitions such as Formula SAE, Formula Student, ASME Student Design Competition, HPVC, NASA RASC-AL, or DARPA challenges.
  • Awards or publications such as best-paper awards at ASME IMECE, IDETC, or Turbo Expo, publications in journals like JMPS, or recognition such as ASME Melville or Blackall Medals.
  • Early-career fellowships or grants, for example NSF CAREER or DOE Early Career awards.
