About this role
Role Overview
Help a leading AI research team improve how frontier models perform real legal work. Your specialist legal judgment will shape task quality, define correct solutions, and create rigorous evaluations that measure model improvement.
This role is designed for practicing legal specialists at the counsel or senior-associate level, with approximately 8 to 15 years of post-qualification experience. It is not intended for early-career lawyers or candidates at partner or General Counsel level.
Key Responsibilities
- Review legal knowledge-work tasks and model outputs, identifying missing behaviors, weak reasoning, and responses that would not meet professional legal standards.
- Write instruction specifications, develop authoritative solutions to legal problems, and create tasks that reflect real legal practice.
- Design demanding legal benchmarks and evaluation sets, and help develop legal-specific skills and tools with the research team.
- Collaborate with researchers and adjacent-domain specialists to calibrate standards and translate professional legal judgment into clear, teachable criteria.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school. Graduation from a highly ranked law school is strongly preferred.
- 8 to 15 years of substantive post-qualification legal practice at an established law firm, corporate legal department, regulatory body, or court. Internships and clerkships alone do not qualify.
- Current or prior experience as counsel, senior associate, senior in-house counsel, or Assistant General Counsel, with meaningful ownership of legal matters.
- Specialization in at least one substantive practice area, such as corporate and transactional law, litigation and dispute resolution, regulatory and compliance, intellectual property, employment and labor, or tax.
- Admission to at least one U.S. state bar in good standing.
- Hands-on professional use of large language models and the ability to distinguish sound legal reasoning from plausible but incorrect answers.
- Excellent written communication skills and the ability to provide precise, well-structured feedback.
Work Terms
- Full-time W-2 employment, with a 40-hour-per-week commitment for an initial six-month engagement.
- Hybrid position based in the Bay Area, California. You must work on-site with the client team multiple days per week when required; this is not a remote role.
- Client-issued accounts and equipment will be provided, and you will work in the client’s tools alongside its research teams.
Compensation
$85 to $120 per hour.
Eligibility
- You must live in the Bay Area or be willing to relocate there at your own expense before the engagement begins. Relocation assistance is not provided.
- The employer provides W-2 employment, payroll, benefits, and compliance administration. Applying through this listing initiates consideration for placement with the client team.
- Qualified applicants are considered without discrimination based on legally protected characteristics. Reasonable accommodations are available for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans throughout the application process.
