Role Overview

Merchandising and category management specialists apply pricing strategy, markdown planning, and competitive analysis expertise to evaluate AI-generated content and produce expert-level training data that improves AI understanding of merchandising and category workflows and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Use hands-on experience with pricing strategy, markdown planning, and competitive analysis to review and score AI-generated responses for accuracy and practical relevance.
  • Provide clear, actionable feedback and annotations that reflect real-world merchandising and category management decisions.
  • Create example prompts and reference responses that capture standard workflows, edge cases, and business rules used in retail merchandising.
  • Leverage the tools and data formats you use in daily work to produce high-quality training data and evaluations.
  • Work asynchronously with an AI research team, following instructions and quality guidelines to meet project goals.
  • No prior AI experience is required; domain expertise in merchandising and category management is the priority.
Qualifications
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in merchandising, category management, or buying.
  • Relevant job titles include Merchandiser, Merchandise Planner, Category Manager, Buyer, or equivalent retail roles.
  • Hands-on knowledge of merchandising and category management workflows, including pricing strategy, including tariff and competitive pricing analysis, markdown optimization and hindsight analysis, and promotional campaign planning.
  • Strong written communication skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and asynchronously with research teams.
Work Terms
  • Engagement type: part-time, hourly contract work as an independent contractor, not a traditional full-time employee role.
  • Fully remote, with a flexible, asynchronous schedule and no minimum hours required.
  • Typical active participation ranges from approximately 5, 20 hours per week when assigned to an active project.
  • Ongoing, project-based assignments that can be done alongside research, teaching, postdoctoral work, or industry employment.
  • Placement depends on current project needs, with consideration for contributors on future projects as new opportunities arise.
Compensation
  • Paid hourly, Up to $80/hr (depending on the project).
Eligibility
  • F-1 students with valid CPT or OPT authorization may be eligible to participate, subject to your school and Designated School Official approval.
  • If your school requires enrollment in a specific CPT course, this type of project work may not satisfy that requirement.
  • STEM OPT is not supported for this type of engagement.
