About this role

Role Overview

Contribute expert SolidWorks and parametric CAD skills to a high-impact mechanical design project. You will create and refine robust, fully parametric 3D part and assembly models, apply manufacturability and tolerance judgment, and produce clear CAD deliverables that will be used to train next-generation AI systems. No prior AI experience is required; domain expertise in mechanical CAD and manufacturing is the priority.

About micro1

micro1 is an AI data lab that converts real-world subject matter expertise into high-quality training data and evaluations for frontier models. The company engages domain experts across fields such as engineering to improve how AI systems learn and reason. This engagement connects contributors to curated, project-based work that shapes model behavior.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create fully parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies from written briefs, emphasizing robust feature trees and precise constraints.
  • Edit and update existing parametric models to meet new technical requirements, documenting all changes in the model and project records.
  • Audit and review models for dimensional accuracy, correct tolerance application, and manufacturability for various processes.
  • Apply design for manufacturability principles for injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, and casting or forging during modeling and review.
  • Translate design intent and requirements into structured CAD data suitable for AI training and downstream use.
  • Communicate with project coordinators and other contributors through detailed written reports and verbal updates.
Qualifications
  • Required technical skills: SolidWorks, parametric CAD modeling, GD&T, design for manufacturability, mechanical design, injection molding, sheet metal design, CNC machining, casting and forging, assembly-level modeling, CAD editing, design documentation, reverse engineering, scan-to-CAD, manufacturability analysis, feature tree management, and tolerance application.
  • Programming and automation familiarity is a plus, including Python, iLogic, or VBA for CAD workflow automation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on concise project documentation.
  • Preferred experience levels: 4+ years hands-on parametric CAD experience for editing tasks, 10+ years for creating complex assemblies.
  • Practical application of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 or equivalent in real manufacturing contexts.
  • Track record supporting at least two manufacturing methods among injection molding, sheet metal, CNC, or casting/forging.
  • Current, active involvement in mechanical or industrial CAD modeling is expected.
  • Reverse engineering experience, including point cloud conversions and scan-to-CAD workflows, is a significant advantage.
Work Terms
  • Role type: Contractor, remote engagement.
  • Work focuses on a mechanical design project for an external customer, with contributions used to train AI systems.
  • Independent contractor relationship, paid on an hourly basis.
Compensation
  • Pay rate: $40.00 to $100.00 per hour.
Eligibility
  • Candidates must be able to engage as independent contractors and perform remote work.
  • No prior AI experience is required, only domain expertise in mechanical CAD and manufacturing.
