About this role
Role Overview
Help test advanced AI systems on radiological safety questions where legitimate professional guidance and potential misuse can be difficult to distinguish. Your expertise will help determine whether models answer routine technical questions appropriately, identify dual-use concerns, and refuse genuinely dangerous requests.
Key Responsibilities
- Create challenging, single-turn radiological safety prompts classified as benign, dual-use, or adversarial.
- Evaluate model responses against a defined policy standard and determine whether each response was handled correctly.
- Develop reference answers that show the appropriate response and explain the underlying technical reasoning.
- Write clear rationales for each judgment that non-specialists can understand.
Qualifications
Relevant experience includes responsibility for radioactive materials through source custody, licensing, security, or emergency response, rather than only working near radioactive materials. Strong candidates can distinguish routine professional questions from requests that may be probing for misuse potential.
- Radiation Safety Officer for a broad-scope licensee, including responsibility for acquisition, inventory, transfer, and disposal.
- Health Physicist at a DOE site or national laboratory, with experience in surveys, assay, contamination control, or dose planning in high-hazard settings.
- Source Security or Vulnerability Assessment Specialist with experience assessing theft, shielding, or movement risks involving Category 1 and 2 sources.
- Radiological Emergency Response Specialist with FRMAC, CBRN response, dispersal, or contamination-modeling experience.
- Nuclear Medicine Physicist or Cyclotron Radiation Safety Officer with medical isotope production and handling experience.
- Red-teaming experience is preferred.
- Technical writing, published research, or expert-witness experience is a strong advantage. Include a writing sample or link with your application.
Work Terms
- Remote, per-task engagement.
- The work involves sustained reading and writing about radiological misuse scenarios. You will be briefed in advance and may pause or step away at any time without penalty.
Compensation
65 to 75 per task.
Eligibility
Do not use classified, export-controlled, NDA-protected, or prepublication-review information in this work. Candidates with such obligations may still be eligible; disclose them in your application so the scope of work can be adjusted accordingly.
