Radiation Safety Officer for AI Model Red-Teaming

Role Overview

Help assess frontier AI systems at the boundary between legitimate radiological safety work and potentially dangerous misuse. You will apply practitioner judgment to determine when a technical request should receive a complete answer and when it requires a refusal, including scenarios involving isotopes, shielding, source security, worker protection, and other dual-use topics.

Key Responsibilities

• Create challenging single-turn radiological safety prompts and label them as benign, dual-use, or adversarial.
• Evaluate AI responses against a defined policy standard and determine whether each response was handled appropriately.
• Develop reference answers that show the appropriate response and explain the underlying technical reasoning.
• Provide clear written rationales that non-specialists can understand.

Qualifications

This writing-intensive work is best suited to practitioners who have held radiation-safety licensing responsibility, rather than only working under a license. Relevant experience may include:

• Named Radiation Safety Officer on a broad-scope license, with responsibility for program management, source inventory, and regulatory compliance.
• RSO or deputy RSO at a university, hospital, or research institution operating mixed-radionuclide and sealed-source programs.
• Industrial or irradiator RSO experience involving Category 1 or 2 sealed sources, radiography, gauging, or sterilization.
• Licensing and compliance work involving NRC, Agreement State, or national-regulator submissions, amendments, and inspections.
• Radiation protection management accountable for ALARA, audits, training, and incident reporting across multiple authorized users.

Red-teaming experience is preferred. Technical writing, published research, or expert-witness experience is also valued. Candidates should be able to distinguish routine professional requests from requests that may conceal harmful intent.

Work Terms

• Remote, per-task independent contractor engagement.
• The work includes sustained reading and writing about radiological misuse scenarios. You may pause or step away at any time without penalty.

Compensation

• 65 to 75 per task.
