Nuclear Engineer, Fuel Cycle

Role Overview

Help assess how advanced AI systems handle high-stakes nuclear fuel cycle questions, distinguishing legitimate technical requests from requests with misuse potential. This writing-intensive, remote engagement draws on practical fuel cycle and safeguards expertise to develop challenging scenarios and determine whether model responses follow an established safety policy.

Key Responsibilities

• Create single-turn nuclear-domain prompts categorized as benign, dual-use, or adversarial.
• Evaluate AI responses against a defined policy standard and determine whether each response was handled correctly.
• Develop reference answers that show the appropriate response and explain the technical reasoning behind the judgment.
• Use practitioner judgment to distinguish routine professional questions, such as criticality safety or material-balance work, from requests that may indicate harmful intent.
• Provide clear written rationales that non-specialists can understand.

Qualifications

• Professional experience in one or more fuel cycle areas, including enrichment, conversion, fuel fabrication, reprocessing, separations, waste streams, spent fuel management, criticality safety, fuel cycle systems analysis, modeling, safety analysis, or licensing for a fuel-cycle facility.
• Ability to assess which technical parameters are appropriate for routine engineering discussion and which may present misuse concerns.
• Strong technical writing ability. Published research, prior technical writing, expert witness experience, and red-teaming experience are valuable.

Work Terms

• Remote, per-task engagement.
• The work includes sustained reading and writing about misuse scenarios. Advance briefing is provided, and you may pause or step away at any time without penalty.

Compensation

• Compensation is 65 to 75 per task.
