About this role

Help improve music and audio technology by turning careful listening into precise, structured training data. In this remote contract role, you will evaluate short real-world recordings and document the musical and environmental details that are actually audible.

Key Responsibilities
  • Listen to 30-90 second field recordings using headphones in a quiet workspace.
  • Create structured annotations identifying instruments, tempo, musical key, scene details, and timestamps for background events such as traffic, sirens, and applause.
  • Compare recordings of the same song captured in different locations, noting what remains consistent and what changes.
  • In later project phases, assess AI-generated clip descriptions, identify accurate, incorrect, or unsupported details, and provide brief evidence-based explanations.
  • Attend a paid onboarding and calibration session, plus a short weekly sync.
Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of hands-on music or audio experience.
  • Strong analytical listening skills, including the ability to distinguish individual instruments in busy, real-world audio mixes.
  • Ability to identify tempo within a few BPM and musical key. Relative pitch with a reference is acceptable.
  • Comfort with detailed, repetitive web-based annotation tasks involving dropdowns, timestamps, and short structured notes.
  • Clear written English for concise, evidence-based observations, such as noting when an instrument enters.
  • Quality headphones, a quiet workspace, and reliable internet access.
Relevant Backgrounds
  • Working or gigging musicians, session players, producers, or mixing engineers.
  • Music educators, ear-training instructors, band or choir directors, and conservatory students or graduates.
  • Location sound recordists, sound designers, foley artists, and podcast or documentary audio editors.
Work Terms
  • Remote independent contractor engagement.
  • Availability of 20-25 hours per week during the engagement window is required.
Compensation

$30-$45 per hour.
