About this role

Role Overview

Apply operational military and international humanitarian law expertise to help train and evaluate next-generation AI systems used to assess defense and humanitarian scenarios. This remote contract role focuses on translating real-world knowledge of warfighting, weapons, targeting, defense operations, and conflict ethics into structured frameworks, benchmarks, and analyses. Prior AI experience is not required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed taxonomies for military use and defense operations across varied conflict contexts.
  • Create dual-use triage frameworks that distinguish military from civilian applications of technology and knowledge.
  • Define boundaries for prohibited assistance under international humanitarian law and provide structured input for AI training and evaluation.
  • Design conflict-risk rubrics and scenario-based tools to assess the operational and ethical implications of defense activities.
  • Evaluate and improve policy-relevant benchmarks for responsible AI testing in defense and humanitarian contexts.
  • Produce written and verbal analyses that clearly explain complex warfighting, targeting, and international humanitarian law concepts to interdisciplinary audiences.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of relevant military, defense analysis, or international humanitarian law experience. Senior contributors will ideally have 8 to 20 years of experience.
  • Advanced degree, such as an MA, LLM, or PhD, or equivalent operational experience in military science, security studies, international law, or a related field.
  • Established credibility and a demonstrated record in warfighting, operational planning, targeting law, or humanitarian law application.
  • Expertise interpreting and applying conflict ethics, international humanitarian law, and defense policy frameworks in real-world scenarios.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey technical and ethical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Experience in research, policy analysis, or advisory work within military, government, legal, or think-tank environments.
  • Experience with conflict analysis, war-crimes investigations, or weapons-policy development is strongly preferred.

Work Terms

  • Remote contract engagement.

Compensation

  • $50 to $90 per hour.
