Role Overview

Use deep operational and legal expertise in warfighting, targeting, weapons, and humanitarian law to shape how next-generation AI systems are trained and evaluated. This contractor role focuses on translating real-world military and international humanitarian law knowledge into structured guidance, taxonomies, and evaluation tools that inform responsible AI behavior in defense and humanitarian scenarios. No prior experience in AI is required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply subject-matter expertise to develop training inputs and evaluation materials for AI systems addressing defense and humanitarian contexts.
  • Develop comprehensive taxonomies for military use and defense operations across diverse conflict environments.
  • Create dual-use triage frameworks to distinguish military applications from civilian uses of technology and knowledge.
  • Define clear boundaries for prohibited assistance under international humanitarian law, and produce structured guidance for AI training and evaluation.
  • Design conflict-risk rubrics and scenario-based evaluation tools to assess operational and ethical implications of defense activities.
  • Evaluate and refine policy-relevant benchmarks to ensure responsible testing of AI models in defense and humanitarian contexts.
  • Produce written and verbal analyses that articulate complex warfighting, targeting, and IHL concepts for interdisciplinary audiences.

Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in military roles, defense analysis, or international humanitarian law, ideally 8 to 20 years for senior contributors.
  • Advanced degree such as MA, LLM, or PhD, or equivalent operational experience in military science, security studies, international law, or a related field.
  • Established credibility and track record in warfighting, operational planning, targeting law, or application of humanitarian law in real-world settings.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply conflict ethics, IHL, and defense policy frameworks.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, able to explain technical and ethical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Experience in research, policy analysis, or advisory roles within military, government, legal, or think-tank environments. Prior involvement in conflict analysis, war-crimes investigation, or weapons-policy development is a strong plus.

  • Engagement type: Independent contractor.
  • Location: Remote.
Compensation
  • Hourly rate: $50.00 to $90.00 per hour.
Eligibility
  • Candidates must be able to engage as an independent contractor and perform remote work. No prior AI experience is required; domain expertise in military operations and IHL is the core requirement.
