About this role

Role Overview

Create realistic evaluation tasks based on fire and life safety review work. Using real drawings, documents, and site photos, you will develop the structured deliverables used in practice, such as egress analyses, correction lists, and plan review decisions. You will author both the task and its correct answer, then work with a second reviewer in your discipline who validates the work before release.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop tasks based on egress and life safety plan checks.
  • Review fire access plans, fire alarm designs from design engineer and fire marshal perspectives, and sprinkler systems from engineer, fire marshal, and property insurer perspectives.
  • Create work involving hazardous-materials control area reviews, fire occupancy video inspections, firestop penetration photo verification, and fire system inspection, testing, and maintenance report reviews.
  • Prepare accurate plan markups and structured review outcomes grounded in real-world judgment.
Qualifications
  • Currently hold, or have recently held, a fire and life safety design-review position such as fire marshal or fire prevention plan reviewer, fire protection engineer, or sprinkler and fire alarm designer-reviewer.
  • Hold a fire marshal appointment, NICET Level III or higher certification, or a PE in fire protection.
  • Have at least 3 years of relevant experience, with 8 or more years preferred.
  • Can mark up plan sets and interpret hydraulic calculations and device layouts.
  • Bring practical judgment about occupant loads, travel distances, and coverage gaps, not only code citation knowledge.
  • Experience training junior inspectors or reviewers, writing department correction language or SOPs, conducting acceptance testing, or working across multiple NFPA editions is valued.
Not a Fit
  • Firefighters or fire officers without plan review or inspection responsibility.
  • Sprinkler installers without design or review experience.
  • Alarm technicians whose work is limited to servicing systems rather than designing them.
  • General safety or OSHA specialists.
Work Terms
  • Remote, hourly role for candidates based in the United States.
Compensation

$45 to $60 per hour, depending on experience.
