About this role

Role Overview

Contribute advanced mathematical expertise to the development and evaluation of next-generation AI systems for scientific and mathematical reasoning. Work at the level of an active research mathematician to create, assess, and critique problems, proofs, and formalizations across a wide range of pure and applied mathematics, and help identify subtle failure modes where current models fall short.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and evaluate research papers in mathematics for correctness, novelty, and rigor.
  • Author and review challenging mathematical problems used to train and evaluate frontier AI models.
  • Assess model outputs on tasks such as proof construction and verification, problem solving, formalization, and conjecture exploration.
  • Detect and document subtle errors a practicing mathematician would notice, for example an unjustified step, a misapplied hypothesis, a hand-waved lemma, or a proof that is plausible but incorrect.
  • Collaborate with a small program team and other senior contributors.
Areas of Focus

Number theory, algebra, algebraic geometry, topology, analysis, partial differential equations, probability, combinatorics, dynamical systems, logic, representation theory, mathematical physics, and adjacent areas of theoretical computer science and statistics.

Qualifications
  • Evidence of research at the frontier of mathematics, for example first-author or sole-author publications in top journals such as Annals of Mathematics, Inventiones Mathematicae, Journal of the AMS, Acta Mathematica, Duke Mathematical Journal, Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, Geometry & Topology, JEMS, GAFA, Advances in Mathematics, or Probability Theory and Related Fields. For adjacent fields, equivalent top-tier venues such as STOC, FOCS, SODA, or Annals of Statistics qualify.
  • Doctoral degree or postdoctoral training from a top-20 global institution in mathematics or a related STEM field.
  • Recognition by competitive fellowships or honors is a plus, for example Clay Research Fellowship, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship or NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship, Sloan Research Fellowship, Packard Fellowship, Simons Fellowship or Simons Investigatorship, AMS Centennial Fellowship, Hertz Fellowship, Marshall or Rhodes Scholarship, New Horizons in Mathematics Prize, Salem Prize, or Ramanujan Prize. Earlier-career applicants may instead highlight Putnam Fellow placement or an International Mathematical Olympiad medal.
  • Holding an NSF CAREER award or comparable grant as a named Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator is relevant experience.
  • Current or recent experience in an active research role, for example as a PhD candidate, postdoctoral researcher, instructor, faculty member, principal researcher, or industry research mathematician.
  • Outstanding senior PhD students and recent graduates with strong publication records are encouraged to apply, the depth of research output matters more than years of experience.
Work Terms
  • Placement: This position will be placed at a leading AI lab as part of their extended workforce.
  • Location: Remote.
  • Employment type: Hourly, W-2 employment administered by the employer of record.
  • Time commitment: Part-time, up to 20 hours per week.
  • Employment administration: The employer of record will provide payroll, compliance, and placement directly within the client team.
Compensation
  • Pay rate: $80 to $110 per hour, variable to reflect research seniority and credentials.
Eligibility and Project Availability
  • Opportunities are offered to a select cohort of accomplished mathematicians; placement depends on selection into that cohort and available projects.
  • Employment is contingent on acceptance into the cohort and placement with the client team.
How to Apply

Apply through the job posting where you found this opportunity. Applications will be reviewed for inclusion in the select cohort. If engaged, the employer of record will handle onboarding, employment paperwork, payroll, and benefits, and will place you directly within the client team.

Employer and Equal Employment Opportunity

The employer of record for this engagement is a staffing company that partners with technology organizations to source and employ skilled professionals for contingent and contract opportunities. This employer provides W-2 employment, payroll, and compliance, and places employees directly within client teams.

This employer is an equal employment opportunity organization. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex including pregnancy and related medical conditions, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, veteran status, disability, genetic information, political views or activity, or any other legally protected characteristic.
