Mathematician for AI Model Evaluation

Contribute advanced mathematical expertise to the development and evaluation of next-generation AI systems that reason about mathematics at the level of active research. You will work with a small program team and other senior contributors to create tasks, analyze model behavior, and identify subtle mathematical errors that only an experienced research mathematician would catch. This role is part of a select cohort placed within a leading AI research lab as extended workforce, working remotely on high-impact research evaluation and problem creation.

• Review and evaluate research papers in mathematics for correctness, novelty, and rigor.
• Author and review challenging mathematics problems and evaluation tasks used to train and assess frontier AI models.
• Evaluate model outputs across tasks including proof construction and verification, problem-solving, formalization, and conjecture exploration.
• Identify and document areas where current models fail, with attention to subtle errors such as unjustified steps, misapplied hypotheses, hand-waved lemmas, or plausible but incorrect proofs.
• Collaborate with a small program team and other senior contributors to iterate on tasks and evaluations.

• Demonstrated research record in mathematics or closely related fields. Examples of qualifying achievements include first-author or sole-author publications in top journals such as Annals of Mathematics, Inventiones Mathematicae, Journal of the AMS, Acta Mathematica, Duke Mathematical Journal, Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, Geometry & Topology, JEMS, GAFA, Advances in Mathematics, or Probability Theory and Related Fields. For adjacent fields, top-tier venues such as STOC, FOCS, SODA, or Annals of Statistics also qualify.
• A doctorate or postdoctoral training from a top-20 global institution in mathematics or a related STEM field is typical.
• Recognition by competitive fellowships or honors is a strong indicator, for example Clay Research Fellowship, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship or NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship, Sloan Research Fellowship, Packard Fellowship, Simons Fellowship or Simons Investigatorship, AMS Centennial Fellowship, Hertz Fellowship, Marshall or Rhodes Scholarship, New Horizons in Mathematics Prize, Salem Prize, or Ramanujan Prize. Earlier-career alternatives include Putnam Fellow placement or an International Mathematical Olympiad medal.
• Experience as a named Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on an NSF CAREER award or comparable grant is relevant.
• Current or recent active research experience, such as PhD candidate, postdoctoral researcher, instructor, faculty member, principal researcher, or industry research mathematician.
• Outstanding senior PhD students and recent graduates with strong publication records are encouraged to apply; depth of research output is more important than years of experience.

• Location: Remote.
• Part-time engagement, up to 20 hours per week.
• Employment type: hourly.
• Placement: this role will be placed at a leading AI research lab as part of their extended workforce.
• Employer of record: Cincinnatus LLC will administer employment, providing W-2 employment, payroll, and compliance, while placing employees within client teams.

• Pay range: 80 to 110 hourly. Compensation will reflect research seniority and credentials.

This hiring is for a select cohort of accomplished mathematicians contributing to AI research in scientific and mathematical reasoning. Placement and specific project assignments are determined as part of the program, and opportunities are oriented toward contributors whose research is at the frontier.
