Materials Modeling Engineer for AI Research

Materials Modeling Engineers apply computational modeling and materials simulation expertise to evaluate AI-generated outputs and produce expert analytical work that improves AI understanding of materials modeling and research engineering practices. This role involves performing real technical tasks from your professional practice on a flexible, hourly contract basis rather than a traditional full-time job.

• Review and evaluate AI-generated content related to materials modeling and research engineering, providing detailed feedback to improve model accuracy and domain understanding.
• Independently produce expert-level analytical work and data outputs using the tools, methods, and workflows you use in professional practice.
• Complete structured, project-based deliverables that mirror real work tasks, for example building price forecast models or developing PPA documentation, when requested by a project.
• Document methods, assumptions, and results clearly so outputs can be used for model training and evaluation.

• At least 2 years of professional experience in materials science, computational modeling, or research engineering in roles such as Materials Scientist, Materials Modeling Engineer, Battery R&D Engineer, Computational Chemist, Modeling & Simulation Engineer, Controls Engineer, or equivalent positions in the energy or research sector.
• Hands-on experience with one or more of the following tools: MATLAB, Materials Studio.
• Strong written communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and asynchronously.

Part-time, hourly contract work performed fully remotely with a flexible, asynchronous schedule. There is no minimum hour requirement. Contributors typically work approximately 5 to 20 hours per week when participating in an active project. This engagement can be carried out alongside research, teaching, postdoctoral appointments, or industry employment. Placement on specific projects depends on current project needs, and contributors may be considered for future projects as they become available.

Up to $80/hr (depending on the project)

F-1 students who are eligible for CPT or OPT may qualify to participate, but you must confirm eligibility with your Designated School Official. If your school requires enrollment in a CPT course, this type of contract work may not meet that requirement. STEM OPT is not supported.
