Legal Research Specialist for Lexis+ Evaluation

This role verifies and validates legal research produced using Lexis+. You will confirm that cases, statutes, and regulations cited are good law for the points cited, verify quotations, holdings, and pin cites, and judge whether controlling and on-point authority has been located. The work emphasizes precision with citators, multi-jurisdictional research, historical statute versions, and use of Lexis+ features including Protégé and Shepard''s tools.

• Confirm that every case, statute, and regulation cited remains good law for the point relied on, noting negative Shepard''s treatment and other adverse signals.
• Identify non-existent, misdescribed, or miscited authorities, and verify quotations, holdings, and pin cites against source materials.
• Assess completeness of research, including whether controlling authority has been found, whether on-point cases were missed, and whether 50-state or multi-jurisdiction splits are presented distinctly.
• Verify currency and the correct version of statutes and regulations for a given operative date, including historical and effective-date comparisons.
• Distinguish binding from persuasive authority, and mark items that must be re-verified before materials are finalized.
• Use Lexis+ features to support verification, including citators, headnotes, case summaries, case notes, Protégé filters and AI-assisted search, Shepard''s graphical case history, litigation analytics, Brief Analysis, and docket records.

• Citators and good-law assessment, including Shepard''s Signal indicators, Depth of Discussion indicators, citing references, and overruling risk, and the ability to distinguish overruled, superseded, depublished, or distinguished-on-facts authority.
• Search techniques, including terms-and-connectors (Boolean) and natural-language search, segment searching, and using Protégé for litigation issue filters and AI-assisted natural-language queries.
• Familiarity with Lexis Headnotes, Case Summaries, and Case Notes as tools analogous to annotated statute notes of decisions.
• Secondary sources familiarity, such as treatises (for example Matthew Bender), American Law Reports, American Jurisprudence, practice guides, Practical Guidance resources, and 50-state survey materials.
• Statutes and regulations skills, including annotated statutes and regulations, version comparisons, historical and effective-date research, and currentness verification for a specified operative date.
• Analytics and records experience, including Litigation Analytics (for example Lex Machina), Brief Analysis, and working with dockets, court records, and PACER-type sources.

• Regular, substantive use of Lexis+ in your current or recent role, at least weekly.
• Minimum 2 years of professional legal research experience.
• J.D. with bar admission, or an MLIS or equivalent law librarian or research-heavy professional experience.
• Reflexive use of citators such as Shepard''s or comparable services, with the ability to spot bad cites, misstated holdings, superseded statutes, or other citation defects on sight.

• Hourly rate: 76 to 120 per hour.

• You must use Lexis+ regularly, meaning weekly or more, as part of your work.
• At least 2 years of professional legal-research experience is required.
• Acceptable credentials include a J.D. with bar admission, an MLIS, or comparable research-intensive experience.
